Description: Originially opened in the late 1890's as Dyker Meadow Golf Club -- needless to say Brooklyn was a lot different place back then -- this course evolved over the years and was eventually bought by the city and redesigned in the 1930's by Jon Van Kleek.  The same architect that built Pelham/Split Rock in the Bronx, Van Kleek's design is open and forgiving, making it the perfect track for the beginner and mid- to high-handicapper.

Occuping over 200 acres, the land is really expansive for an inner-city complex and lets the golfer forget that he or she is in the middle of Brooklyn.  The land itself is relatively flat and open, with some trees here and there that don't create woods, but certainly affect shot selection.  Although it's pretty short, Dyker Beach a terrific place to learn the game, and it's only a R train and a 10-minute walk from midtown Manhattan.

Signature Hole: No. 11, 201-yard Par 3.  Playing downhill, this longish par-3 is noted for some extremely difficult pin-placements due to the unique design of the green.

Reader Comments: Pace of play can be impossible at times ... Conditions vary dramatically, one good year, one bad year.

Directions: Distance from Manhattan approximately 12 miles.
By Auto:  Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to Belt Pkwy. (east, toward JFK Airport).  Travel approximately 9 miles to Exit 86th St.  Go left, at traffic light, 3 blocks to course.  By Subway:  R line to Brooklyn, 86th St. and 4th Ave. station.  Walk 3 blocks to course at 86th St. and 7th Ave.
